This month's top questions:
Q:
Why does my cat like to rub its paws in my hair all the time? Is this normal? -Christine
A:
Not only is it perfectly normal, you should be flattered that your cat loves you so much! This type of behavior is actually your cat's way of expressing affection. Some cats will "knead" you while they're sitting in your lap, yours prefers to knead your hair. It's a behavior your cat learned while it was a kitten - kittens will knead their mother's teats in order to increase the milk flow.
It's not a problem as long as this type of behavior doesn't bother you. If you'd rather that your cat doesn't do this, just say "No!" loudly and gently lift your cat away from your hair.
Q:
I have a 4 year old cat and a 3 month old kitten. The kitten is a girl and keeps urinating on my carpet - but she knows how to use her box the rest of the time. I have tried sprays from the vet but to no avail. Any ideas? -Jason
A:
Do you have separate litter boxes for each cat? It's possible that your kitten doesn't like using the litter box because the other cat has used it and considers the box to be too dirty. Cats can be very picky that way - they'll stop using the litter box if the other cat hasn't properly covered its 'business' or if it gets too full. Be sure to change or scoop the litter box on a daily basis. Another possibility is that your kitten is intimidated by your older cat. If the older cat is near the litter box when the kitten needs to use it, she might be too afraid and goes on the carpet instead. Cats can also be very particular about the type of litter used. If you go back and forth between litter types, she may be 'rebelling' because she prefers one type over the other. If none of these suggestions cure the problem, take your kitten to your veterinarian to ensure that it isn't a medical problem that's causing her to have these relapses.

When cats adopted us
Cats were domesticated much later than dogs, probably not until agriculture developed in the 'Fertile Crescent' of the Middle East. Dogs were domesticated 12,000 years ago, but cats didn't adopt us until 4,000 years ago.
