Keep Your Cat Going Strong

Those of us who have watched our cats grow up know kittens are feisty, playful, and full of boundless energy. Sometimes, it’s even hard for us humans to keep up! After all, we weren’t born with tails to chase or taught to pounce at the first moving object within sight.

But as cats leave kittenhood, they’re less likely to continue their consistent play routine. That’s where we come in to help them continue living an active, healthful lifestyle. Here are some great pointers on encouraging the best exercise for your cat:

Your Cat and the Outside World:

Sure, the outdoor wonderland offers more in the way of physical activity and freedom. But, beware. You never know what you’ll get with nature. There’s a good chance of hazards and predators doing what they do best. If you’d like to give your cat the best outdoor life possible, consider building a spacious barrier with strong wood posts and wire netting. This will give your cat a better—but safer—opportunity to roam around outside.

We always suggest getting your cat a collar, customized with his or her name and with an elastic section for easy slip-off.

On Walking Your Cat:

Believe it or not, cats can grow to enjoy the leash almost as much as dogs. All it takes is a little bit of patience on your end. When it comes to the leash:

  • Always use a harness. Cats tend to slip out of the collar alone.
  • Start young, if possible. And put the harness on for very short periods of time to warm your cat up to the idea.
  • Then, do the same with the leash and engage in short walks around the house.
  • Continue with your indoor practice walks, but introduce a toy or treat for bribery.
  • Once your cat becomes used to the feel of walking with the leash, collar, and harness, it’s time to go outside. Remember, start short, then work your way up to longer walks.

Above all, use your judgment. As long as you provide a safe and fun environment for your cat, he or she is in for endless exploration and adventure.
